Lakeland Linder International Airport (KLAL) wrapped another spring tradition, and if you were lucky enough to walk the flight line in early April, you already know: Sun 'n Fun 2026 delivered exactly the kind of week that keeps hobby pilots grinning for months. Six days of sunshine, radial-engine rumble, and that unmistakable mix of avgas and kettle corn — this is what the East Coast counterpart to AirVenture Oshkosh is all about.

We spent the week wandering the rows, talking to builders, chasing demo flights, and standing in awe under the Florida sky. Here is the friendly, no-criticism recap.

The Vibe: A Community Reunion

Sun 'n Fun has always punched above its weight. While Oshkosh draws the global GA pilgrimage in late July, Lakeland kicks off the season every April and sets the tone for the year. Hobby pilots, CFIs, A&Ps, kids in EAA Young Eagles t-shirts, and grizzled warbird crews all share the same taxiway — and somehow it just works.

This year felt particularly warm. The crowds were strong, the weather cooperated for almost every flying display, and the evening light over the Florida pines was, as always, something that no smartphone camera quite does justice.

Warbird Magic

The warbird ramp remains the soul of the event. P-51 Mustangs, T-6 Texans, a beautifully kept B-25 Mitchell, a Corsair that drew a crowd every time the canopy slid open — the lineup was a love letter to aviation history. Group flyovers paired Mustangs with their modern descendants, and the "Heritage Flight" segment, as always, gave us all a lump in the throat.

If you have never stood thirty feet from a Merlin engine at full song, put it on the bucket list. And if you have, you already know why people come back year after year.

GA Exhibitor Row

The general aviation manufacturers brought their A-game. Cirrus had the new SR-series demonstrators on static display and ran a steady cadence of demo flights for prospective owners. Cessna's booth highlighted the latest Skyhawk and Skylane configurations, with the training community out in force chatting avionics packages. Piper showed off the Pilot 100i and the Archer line, leaning into the flight school market that anchors so much of GA.

Mooney's presence was a treat for the speed enthusiasts — the Acclaim still turns heads, and it was great to see the type club out signing up new members. Van's Aircraft had what felt like the busiest booth on the field, with RV-14, RV-15, and the ever-popular RV-10 drawing crowds of homebuilders trading tips. The Van's tent always feels like a family reunion, and 2026 was no exception.

Honorable mentions to the Light Sport row, the experimental builders, and the avionics vendors — Garmin, Avidyne, and Dynon all had hands-on stations where you could click through the latest software updates.

Notable Announcements and Launches

Sun 'n Fun has quietly become a real launch venue. This year brought a healthy crop of product reveals: new autopilot integrations, fresh ADS-B accessories, a couple of slick portable EFB mounts, and several updates to popular kit aircraft. The eVTOL and electric flight corner continued to grow, with developmental aircraft on display and engineers happy to nerd out with anyone curious.

We will not single out any one announcement here — there were too many good ones, and every team that brought something deserves credit for the work.

Education and Safety

The seminar tents were packed all week. The FAA Safety Team ran their "WINGS" program sessions, covering everything from weather decision-making to runway incursion prevention. The AOPA Air Safety Institute brought their always-excellent presenters for sessions on accident case studies, BasicMed, and IFR proficiency. Pro tip for next year: get to the popular sessions ten minutes early — the standing-room crowd at the weather seminar was no joke.

The Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE), right on the field, continued its mission of inspiring the next generation. Watching kids climb into a Cessna 152 cockpit for the first time at the SUN 'n FUN STEM activities is the kind of thing that reminds you why this community matters.

The Night Airshow and Fireworks

Saving the best for last: the evening airshow. Wingtip pyrotechnics, glowing aircraft against a dark sky, choreographed routines set to music, and then — fireworks. Sun 'n Fun's night show is one of the signature experiences in American aviation, and 2026 lived up to the hype. Bring earplugs, bring a blanket, find a spot early, and just enjoy.

East Coast Counterpart to Oshkosh

Sun 'n Fun and EAA AirVenture Oshkosh are siblings, not rivals. Lakeland opens the season; Oshkosh anchors the summer. Together they bookend the year for the GA community. If you can only attend one, you cannot go wrong — but if you can swing both, you will understand why so many pilots build their calendar around them.

Already Thinking About AirVenture?

If Lakeland lit the spark and you are eyeing Oshkosh, or any fly-in trip, AeroCopilot can help you plan it end to end — route options, weather windows, fuel stops, camping logistics, and the dozens of little decisions that make a long cross-country actually fun. Open the app, drop in your home base, and let the copilot do the heavy lifting.

See you on the ramp.
