Does flight simulator time count toward a certificate? An honest answer

Home simulator time is never loggable toward an FAA certificate or rating — not one minute, not even with an instructor sitting next to you. The short answer, and the rule behind it

No. Time flown in a consumer flight simulator on your own computer does not count toward any FAA certificate, rating, or aeronautical experience requirement. This is not a technicality or a gray area, and it does not change if a certificated flight instructor is sitting beside you while you fly it.

The rule that governs what you may log is 14 CFR 61.51. It permits logging time in an aircraft, and in a full flight simulator, flight training device, or aviation training device — but those three terms are legal categories, not descriptions of realism. A device only enters one of those categories when the FAA evaluates it and issues a Letter of Authorization (LOA). Consumer simulators are not evaluated, do not hold an LOA, and therefore are not in any of those categories.

This surprises people because the fidelity argument feels persuasive. A modern desktop setup with force-feedback controls, rudder pedals, a working GPS and live weather can be more representative of some tasks than a decades-old FAA-approved BATD with a plastic yoke. That may well be true — and it is irrelevant. Loggability follows the paperwork on the device, not the quality of the simulation.

What an FAA-approved training device actually is

Approved devices sit on a ladder, and the rung determines how much credit is available and under what conditions. The FAA describes the qualification and approval process in Advisory Circular 61-136B.

  • BATD (Basic Aviation Training Device) — the entry rung. Approved for a limited amount of instrument training credit toward a rating, always with an authorized instructor providing the training.
  • AATD (Advanced Aviation Training Device) — more capability, more credit. Commercial ATDs from manufacturers such as Redbird, RealSimGear and FlyThisSim are typically approved at this level as complete hardware-and-software systems.
  • FTD (Flight Training Device) and FFS (Full Flight Simulator) — the professional tiers, qualified under 14 CFR Part 60. This is where type ratings and airline training live.

Two details matter more than the ladder itself. First, the LOA attaches to a specific hardware and software configuration — an approved AATD stops being an approved AATD if you swap components. Second, credit toward a certificate or rating in any ATD requires an authorized instructor to provide and record the training. There is no path in which you sit down alone at any device and generate credit toward a rating.

The single exception to the instructor requirement is narrow and worth knowing precisely: since a 2018 rule change, instrument recency of experience under 14 CFR 61.57(c) may be maintained in an approved ATD without an instructor present. That exception applies to approved devices. A home simulator holds no LOA and is not eligible.

Where people get themselves into trouble

The regulation that turns a harmless misunderstanding into a certificate problem is 14 CFR 61.59, which prohibits fraudulent or intentionally false entries in any logbook, record, or report used to show compliance with a requirement.

The failure mode is rarely deliberate. A student practices for months at home, keeps an enthusiastic record of it, and brings that record to a checkride alongside the real logbook — or worse, adds the hours into a total. From the examiner's side of the table, a page listing dates, aircraft, durations and maneuvers is indistinguishable in shape from a training record, and the conversation that follows is not the one anybody wanted to have that morning.

Keep the two worlds separate in writing. Practice notes are useful — track what you flew and what you want to fix. Just never let them adopt the vocabulary of a logbook, never total them alongside aircraft time, and never present them as evidence of training received.

What a home simulator genuinely does for your flying

Having established what it is not, here is the part that is easy to miss: the research on transfer of training has been broadly favorable to desktop simulation for decades, and the mechanism is well understood.

Studies at the University of Illinois on personal-computer aviation training devices found them effective for teaching and maintaining instrument tasks, with the strongest transfer concentrated in the earliest hours of use. More recently, a 2024 survey of over a thousand certificated pilots by the Flight Simulation Association reported that students who used home simulators were associated with approximately 5.5 fewer flight hours to certificate — an association observed in survey data, not a guaranteed outcome, and one where motivated students who buy simulator hardware are plausibly different from those who do not. Individual results vary, and home simulator time is never loggable (14 CFR 61.51).

What transfers well. Anything procedural or cognitive: checklist flows, cockpit familiarization, instrument scan, holding and approach procedures, radio phraseology, and flying a specific cross-country route before you fly it for real. These are the tasks where the mental model does the work and the physical sensation is incidental.

What does not. Anything that depends on feel: control pressures, the sight picture over the nose in the roundout, peripheral cues in a crosswind, and the seat-of-the-pants sensing of energy in the flare. Practicing a landing flare at home against wrong cues is one of the few ways simulator practice can actively leave you worse off than not practicing at all — this is what the literature calls negative transfer.

How to practice at home so that it transfers

The variable that decides whether home practice helps is structure, not fidelity. Unstructured flying — take off, wander, land, repeat — is entertainment. The same hour spent against a defined objective with a published tolerance is training rehearsal. Four things make the difference.

  • Brief before you fly. Decide the maneuver, and write down the standard you are holding yourself to before the engine starts. The FAA publishes those standards in the Airman Certification Standards (FAA-S-ACS-6C for the private pilot airplane certificate) and the document is free at faa.gov.
  • Configure for honesty. Live weather on, simulation rate at 1×, assists and autopilot off, and no slewing or repositioning mid-maneuver. Every one of those shortcuts quietly invalidates the repetition you just flew.
  • Debrief while it is fresh. Write down what you were outside tolerance on and what you will change. A pattern you cannot see across three sessions is visible immediately in three lines of notes.
  • Take it to your instructor.Not as evidence of training — as a conversation. "I keep losing 150 feet on rollout from steep turns" is a better start to a lesson than discovering it together at $175 an hour.

One caution worth repeating: for maneuvers that live in the feel-dependent category — the landing flare above all — confirm the technique with your flight instructor before you drill it at home. Repetition is a powerful teacher, and it is entirely indifferent to whether what you are repeating is correct.

The bottom line

A home simulator will never give you a single loggable minute, and any product telling you otherwise is either mistaken or selling you something. What it will give you — if you use it with a briefing, a published standard, honest settings and a debrief — is the cheapest repetition available anywhere in aviation, on the tasks where repetition is exactly what you need.
