What-if: fewer flight hours

We do not pre-fill it and we do not predict it: home simulator practice is associated with fewer hours in survey data, but that is a population association with a self-selection confound, not a forecast for you — and none of that practice is loggable in any case.

Why this estimate is probably higher than the one you were quoted

Most advertised prices are quoted at the legal minimum of 40 hours under 14 CFR 61.109. Very few people finish there. The estimator therefore starts from a realistic total rather than the floor — if it defaulted to the minimum it would tell you your training costs roughly half of what it will, which is the single most damaging wrong answer a tool like this can give.

The other quiet multiplier is dual instruction. Instructor time is billed on top of the aircraft for most of your training, so the share of hours flown with someone aboard moves the total far more than the headline hourly rate does.

The what-if box exists because people ask whether practising at home shortens training. Survey data has associated home simulator use with fewer total flight hours, but it is observational: students who set up a home cockpit are also the students who show up prepared, and no survey can separate the two. So we let you model the hours yourself and we label the result as your assumption. Whatever you enter, simulator time at home is never loggable and the regulatory minimum does not move.
